Frequently Asked Questions

Notwithstanding the legal protections afforded by conservation easements, the soils, vegetation, water resources, and wildlife of the preserve remain vulnerable to natural and human-caused impacts. Like any living system, the preserve requires constant care and attention – especially as the forces of climate change and population growth impose an expected and unforeseen challenges to the integrity of the property’s scenic, cultural, historic, and natural systems.
Seasonally, storm events threaten trails, eroding them to a point where they can be unsafe or inaccessible. Vandalism and breakage pose risks to wayfinding signage. Water resources for wildlife require constant maintenance and development. As Commonweal develops new trails, archaeological surveys are required and maps and signage need updating.
As the preserve evolves and the community's aspirations for access to trails and open space grows, Commonweal’s financial capabilities must adapt accordingly.
